Learning with Devin

Whether Devin is teaching writing or music, he takes the same approach. Motivation comes first. This means sessions are student-centered, focused on achievable challenges and material that matters to each individual student.

Devin graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Meanwhile, he worked as a progressive church's music director and took years of guitar, mandolin, and drumming classes at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. He continues to develop his craft through weekly sessions with mentors.

As a teacher, Devin holds a master’s degree in education from Xavier University. He has taught writing and music at Northwestern University, the Greenhouse CoSchool, and West Chester Academy of Music and Dance.

Devin is currently offering lessons in-person and online in both guitar and songwriting. Guitar lessons focus on fingerstyle or flatpicking, electric or acoustic, by ear or with standard notation. Songwriting lessons offer weekly prompts and insights into song structure and process writing.
