Learning with Devin

Whether I'm teaching writing or music, I take the same approach. Motivation comes first. This means sessions are student-centered, focused on achievable material that matters to you.

I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Meanwhile, I worked as a progressive church's music director and took years of guitar, mandolin, and drumming classes at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. These days, I continue to develop my craft through regular lessons with my mentors.

As a teacher, I hold a Master of Education degree from Xavier University. I've taught writing and music at Northwestern University, the Greenhouse CoSchool, and West Chester Academy of Music and Dance.

I am currently offering lessons in-person and online in both guitar and songwriting. Guitar lessons focus on fingerstyle or flatpicking, electric or acoustic, by ear or with standard notation. Songwriting lessons offer weekly prompts and insights into song structure and process writing.
